Literature Review
A literature review is essential for establishing a foundation of knowledge and understanding within a specific study area. Creswell and Plano Clark (2018) highlight that a literature review provides a structured approach to identifying trends, addressing gaps, and framing potential solutions by analyzing and synthesizing existing research. In the context of my innovation plan, the literature review emphasizes the potential of ePortfolios as tools for enhancing reading comprehension and critical thinking in elementary education.
Traditional assessments, such as multiple-choice tests, often fail to foster creativity, analysis, and meaningful learning (Gulamhussein, 2013). In contrast, ePortfolios offer dynamic, student-centered alternatives that promote reflection, ownership, and collaboration. Harapnuik and Thibodeaux (2023) emphasize that the Choice, Ownership, Voice, and Authentic Learning (COVA) framework allows students to engage with academic tasks to connect them to real-world contexts, fostering intrinsic motivation and deeper learning.
This This literature review examines how ePortfolios can create significant learning environments, develop 21st-century skills, and address the shortcomings of traditional assessments. Mertler (2019) states that reflective practices and formative assessments embedded within ePortfolios encourage critical thinking and comprehension. Additionally, the review explores challenges such as technology access, teacher training, and implementation structures while emphasizing the importance of evaluation and feedback for student growth. By synthesizing these insights, this literature review provides a strong foundation for understanding how ePortfolios can empower students and transform elementary education.
